The Pinellas School District was closed Tuesday (Sept. 3) in anticipation of severe weather.

PINELLAS COUNTY – Officials with the Pinellas County School District have determined that no hurricane makeup day will be necessary.

The district was closed Tuesday (Sept. 3) in anticipation of severe weather and to ensure the safety of students, staff, facilities and community.

School officials said they have reviewed state instructional time requirements and the district’s 2019-2020 school calendar. The district determined that with only one missed day because of Hurricane Dorian, there will have enough instructional hours for this school year, and students do not need to make up the day.

At this time, the district follow the 2019-2020 schedule as planned. Please recognize that there are 12 weeks left in hurricane season. If Pinellas experiences any more closures, officials will reevaluate the need to make up days.

Pinellas County Schools thanks the community for its patience as officials monitored the impact of Hurricane Dorian to the Tampa Bay area. The school district worked with Pinellas County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service to track the storm, prepare our schools for possible shelter openings and make the best and safest decisions regarding the closure of schools. While officials said they are relieved that the storm did not hit Tampa Bay, they are heartbroken for those in the Bahamas and other areas who suffered the brunt of the hurricane.
