This is the second consecutive year the J.Hop Times has won the award.

ST. PETERSBURG – The J.Hop Times, the award-winning newspaper and website of the John Hopkins Middle School Center for International Studies in the Arts and Multimedia Journalism, was awarded the prestigious National Scholastic Press Association’s highest honor, the Pacemaker.

This is the second consecutive year that the J.Hop Times has won the award and the program has been named a finalist for the past four years. The school, 701 16th St. S, has won the Peacemaker award three out of the four years.  The J.Hop Times was one of 266 entries from all over the country. All but three of those submissions were from high schools with 50 finalists being named and 29 Pacemakers awarded. John Hopkins Middle is the only middle school to earn a 2016 Pacemaker, making it the home of the best middle school newspaper in the country.

Given annually since 1927, the National Pacemakers reward excellence in American student journalism. The awards are generally considered to be the highest national honors in scholastic journalism, and are unofficially known as the Pulitzer Prizes of student journalism.

John Hopkins Middle School is one of three schools in Pinellas County Schools’ Journeys in Journalism program. The other Journeys in Journalism schools are Melrose Elementary and Lakewood High. Last year, Lakewood earned a Pacemaker.
