TARPON SPRINGS – Tarpon Springs Middle School won a Dairy Council of Florida award for increasing the number of students who eat breakfast.

The school moved the number of breakfast eaters from about 200 to about 450 students. Tarpon Springs Middle will receive $2,500 in cafeteria equipment from the Dairy Council of Florida. In addition, the Dairy Council’s mascot Merry Moo spent a morning at the middle school greeting students.

To increase the number of students eating breakfast, Susan Schermerhorn, Tarpon Middle’s cafeteria manager, came up with the idea of taking breakfast to the students.

In addition to serving breakfast in the school’s cafeteria, Schermerhorn and three other cafeteria workers use carts to take breakfast to the school’s courtyard, bus circle and 22 classrooms where students can get select items.

“Our students now have every opportunity possible to get breakfast,” Principal Raquel Giles said. “Getting the day started with breakfast really helps.”
