Tampa Plastic Surgeon Identified as Pilot Who Died in Indiana Plane Crash

Dr. Daniel Greenwald was named one of America’s Top Surgeons by the Consumers’ Research Council of America in 2009, and was recognized as one of the Best Doctors in Tampa Bay and one of the Best Doctors in America that same year.

TAMPA – Dr. Daniel Greenwald, 59, has been identified as the pilot of a twin-engine plane that crashed Saturday (Oct. 5) in a soybean field near Kokomo, IN.

Dr. Greenwald, who was alone in the plane, died at the scene of the crash, according to news reports. The plane had taken off from Kokomo Municipal Airport sometime before 5 p.m.

Dr. Greenwald was a well known plastic surgeon who had been practicing cosmetic surgery since 1993. He started Bayshore Plastic Surgery in Tampa in 1998.

He was the only board certified plastic surgeon in Tampa Bay with degrees from Princeton, Yale, Harvard and the University of Chicago, according to the practice’s website and Facebook page.

In 2009, he was named one of America’s Top Surgeons by the Consumers’ Research Council of America, and was recognized as one of the Best Doctors in Tampa Bay and one of the Best Doctors in America that same year.

Dr. Greenwald was also an associate professor in the Biomedical Engineering program at the University of South Florida. He had published more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and has received more than $300,000 in research grants. Dr. Greenwald also lectured around the world on plastic surgery and related topics. He had held appointments at the National Institutes of Health and the Water Reed Army Medical Center.

Tampa General Hospital released this statement:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Dr. Daniel Greenwald, an outstanding member of our medical staff for more than two decades. He was an immensely talented surgeon who took on the most complex cases and mastered them. His education included studies at Harvard, Princeton and Yale. He was a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, as well as several other medical and scientific societies, and was nationally respected in his field.

“We will remember Dr. Greenwald’s sparkling intellect, his kindness to everyone he met, and his great enthusiasm, not just for surgical innovation, but for living life to the fullest. He cared intensely about his family, his colleagues, and his friends. No matter how busy he was, he always took time to connect with the people around him with sincerity and empathy. He was deeply dedicated to his patients, including those who faced devastating traumatic injuries, and his rare skills brought so many of them healing and renewed health. All of us at TGH are grieving his loss. We send our deepest sympathies to his family.”
