The Pinellas County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of his death.

PINELLAS COUNTY – A jail inmate died Thursday (Oct. 12), apparently of suicide, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Dyer Kasakoff, 47, of St. Petersburg, died at Northside Hospital where he was taken Tuesday (Oct. 10) after deputies found him. The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of his death.

Deputies said Mr. Kasakoff was found unresponsive about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in a Central Division shower stall at the Pinellas County Jail. Mr. Kasakoff had a strip of fabric around his neck that was attached to a shower rod in the shower stall. He had no other signs of physical injury.

Detention deputies performed CPR and paramedics were called to the jail. He was taken to Northside Hospital for life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses told deputies that Mr. Kasakoff had been seen testing the weight limits of the shower rods in the jail. Deputies said Mr. Kasakoff signed over power of attorney to a family member earlier the same day.

Deputies said Mr. Kasakoff’s death appears to be a suicide. It does not appear suspicious in nature.

Mr. Kasakoff had been in jail since Sept. 29 after he was arrested by the St. Petersburg Police Department and charged with grand theft and possession of heroin.
