Hillsborough Jail Inmate, Accused of DUI, Dies in Custody

An investigation is pending autopsy results from the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the in-custody death of inmate Lewis Harrington II, 62.

Mr. Harrington was booked into the Orient Road Jail about 7:44 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 27) on a charge of driving under the influence.

He attended First Appearance Court the next morning, where his bond for a prior pending DUI was revoked. Shortly after his court hearing, he was admitted to the clinic at Orient Road Jail and about 3:46 p.m. was transferred to the infirmary detox unit at Falkenberg Road Jail.

Just after 5:30 p.m., paramedics were alerted when Mr. Harrington could not be awakened from his bed. They took him to Brandon Regional Hospital where he was pronounced deceased about 6:22 p.m.

There were no signs of foul play and no indications of physical altercations while he was in either facility, deputies said. The investigation is pending autopsy results from the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office.
