Falling Tree Kills Woman at Egmont Key Park

She was struck by the palm while lying in a hammock.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A woman died Saturday (Oct. 20) of injuries she suffered when a palm tree fell on her while she was lying in a hammock at Egmont Key State Park.

Isabel Melendez, 20, died at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where she was taken after she was injured.

The incident was investigated by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office helped on the scene.

Hillsborough deputies said Ms. Melendez’s death did not appear to be suspicious.

Egmont Key is at the mouth of Tampa Bay in HIllsborough County. and can only be reached by boat. The 328-acre island is primarily a national wildlife preserve and has no drinking water or stores on the island. Visitors can see a lighthouse and  the remains of Fort Dade. Visitors can swim, fish, watch wildlife and collect shells.
