Mr. Morroni, who died of cancer, was a long-time political leader in Pinellas County.

TREASURE ISLAND – Pinellas County Commissioner John Morroni died Sunday (May 20, 2018) after losing a battle with cancer. He was 63.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen, and his son, Michael.

“John Morroni was a dedicated public servant with a passion for our community. Our hearts are saddened by his passing, but we are eternally grateful for his leadership and vision for Pinellas,” Pinellas County Commission Chair Ken Welch said. “He has run his race and is at peace with the Lord. His wife, Eileen, and son, Mike, are in our thoughts and prayers.”

Mr. Morroni was recently diagnosed with a blood disorder known as Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a condition he battled as a secondary effect of cancer treatment he previously underwent. He was a 10-year cancer survivor, originally diagnosed and treated in 2008.

He had served Pinellas County residents as District 6 County Commissioner since 2000. He was elected chair of the commission in 2005, 2012 and 2015. Mr. Morroni also served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1992-2000. At the time of his death, he was serving as the chair of Forward Pinellas and of the Value Adjustment Board and was also on the Hurman Rights Board and the Pinellas Park Water Management District board.

Mr. Morroni sponsored an annual appreciation dinner for first responders. This year’s Appreciation Dinner for Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical and Fire Personnel – the 23rd – raised more than $80,000 to benefit Moffitt Cancer Center, which operates in affiliation with the University of South Florida.

As news spread Monday of Mr. Morroni’s passing, accolades poured in from across Tampa Bay.

“Our community has lost a tremendous leader and public servant with the passing of Commissioner Morroni,” said U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Tarpon Springs. “Those of us who had the pleasure to call him friend will remember his passion for helping others, his generosity of spirit and love of family.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.  May his memory be eternal.”

Seminole Mayor Leslie Waters, who served with Mr. Morroni in the Florida House of Representatives, said, “It is with sadness that everyone who knew John Morroni mourns his passing. John really took on life with a zestful enthusiasm, and as he fought health issues in recent years, he gave it his all. We all give our sympathies and send prayers to his wife, Eileen, and son, Mike.”
