Wrong-Way Driver Accused of DUI, Hit and Run, Hillsborough Deputies Say

She refused to submit to breath tests for alcohol, Hillsborough deputies said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A wrong-way driver was arrested Sunday (Dec. 2) after she left the scene when she crashed into another vehicle, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Arline Colon, 49, was charged with one count each of Driving Under the Influence with Property Damage and Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Property Damage. Deputies reported no injuries from the crash.

The crash happened about 9 p.m. at Gunn Highway and Isbell Lane in Hillsborough County.

Colon was driving a black, Jeep Wrangler southbound in the northbound lanes at Gunn Highway and Isbell Lane and hit Brooke Morgan, 21, who was driving a Nissan Altima. Deputies said Morgan swerved into a painted median in an attempt to avoid a crash, but was struck by Colon’s Jeep on the passenger side.

Colon did not stop to provide any information and continued southbound. The front axle of the Jeep Wrangler snapped, and the SUV eventually came to a stop in the roadway near N Mobley Road.

When deputies arrived, they said they found the Jeep on the east side shoulder, facing southbound. Colon was in a gray sedan across from the Jeep with a visible seat belt mark, but her wallet was on the Jeep’s front passenger seat and her black flip flops were under the Jeep’s brake pedal.

Colon smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech, bloodshot watery eyes and was unable to stand under her own power. Deputies said they did not conduct field sobriety exercises for safety reasons because Colon appearing to be extremely intoxicated. She was arrested, charged with DUI, and refused to provide breath samples.
