Woman Had Drugs on Jail Property, Deputies Say

A police dog alerted on the woman’s car, which was in the jail parking lot, Hernando deputies said.

BROOKSVILLE – A Sarasota woman was arrested after drugs were found in her car while it was in the jail parking lot, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

Valerie Howard, 20, of Sarasota, was charged with one count each of of Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Deputies said that, on Tuesday (Dec. 4), members of the Hernando sheriff’s K-9 unit, along with members of the Hernando County detention center special response team, were conducting training in the parking lot of the jail, 16425 Spring Hill Drive, Brooksville.

During the training, K-9 Deputy Jeff Andrews was walking K-9 Valor around vehicles in the visitation parking lot when Valor alerted to the possibilityof drugs inside a vehicle.

Deputies determined the vehicle belonged to Howard, who was inside the jail’s visitation center. Deputies spoke with Howard, who, they said, confirmed that it was her vehicle and allowed deputies inside the vehicle to conduct a search.

Deputies said they found a grinder and a small amount of marijuana inside the vehicle.
