ST. PETERSBURG – A woman was accused of hitting a prison transport van Saturday (Aug. 20) then fleeing the scene, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Emily Spiess, 30, of 350 74th Ave. N, #118, in St. Petersburg, was charged with one count each of fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage, possession of alprazolam, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was also charged with one count each of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and DUI involving property damage, according to Pinellas County Jail records.

Police said they were loading prisoners into the transport van early Saturday when Spiess drove her vehicle into them. She sideswiped one officer and struck the transport van as the other officers got out of the way.

Police said they stopped her at 2nd Avenue N and Bayshore Drive. As she was being taken into custody, her vehicle rolled over an officer’s foot. He was treated at Bayfront Health for a minor injury.
