The student said she did it to “get out of school,” the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.

WEEKI WACHEE – A student at Weeki Wachee High School was arrested today (May 22) after she threatened the school on social media, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.

The 16-year-old student was charged with one count of written threats to kill or do great bodily injury, a felony.

Staff members at the school, 12150 Vespa Way in Weeki Wachee, contacted Deputy Nathan Brooks, the school resource officer, today regarding a campus threat. The threat consisted of an image/text that was being shared by social media.

Brooks was joined by two other deputies, Sgt. Derik Deso and Detective Shawn Galarza, who came to help investigate.

The deputies said they found that the person who claimed to have received the information over social media was the same person who created the post using another social media account that was created for this purpose.

Upon questioning, the student admitted to creating the post, which consisted of a threat to the entire campus, and sharing it. Deputies said the student admitted she did it to “get out of school.”

“This is another example of how well the school resource deputies work their supervisors and detectives to get to the bottom of a threat to shoot up the school,” Hernando Sheriff Al Nienhuis said. “I am happy to report that, because of their diligent work, there was little or no disruption to normal school activities.

“Unfortunately, this is yet another example of a student committing a very serious crime, simply to avoid school. It is critically important that parents, teachers, and fellow students make this kind of behavior socially unacceptable in our schools. This threat could have easily ruined the final few days of school for many hard working students and faculty.”
