TAMPA – Police from the University of South Florida have charged a man with resisting arrest and hitting a police officer.

Esteban Andre Oliveras Rovira, 18, was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, simple battery, resisting arrest with violence, and possession of marijuana, USF officers said. Haley Nichole Kyzer, 19, who said she was attacked by Rovira, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said. Neither Rovira nor Kyzer are connected to USF.

Police said they got a call from Kyzer about 11 a.m. Wednesday (July 13) complaining that Rovira had hit her across the back with a chair after an argument. The two, who had met a few days before, were sharing a room at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 3705 Spectrum Blvd. Although the hotel is not on campus, it is in the USF police force’s jurisdiction.

When officers arrived at the hotel, they said Rovira fled by jumping a hedge. A USF police officer chased him. Both Rovira and the officer landed on the ground. A brief struggle ensued, but the officer was able to free himself. The officer used his Taser to bring Rovira under control. Both Rovira and the officer sustained minor scrapes as a result of the incident. Police searched Rovira’s backpack and found a small amount of marijuana.
