PALM HARBOR – An Uber driver was arrested today (June 3) after he was accused of stealing a gold necklace from a passenger, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Alexander J. Troy, 28, of Clearwater, was charged with one county of strong arm robbery.
Deputies received a complaint from Ian Mount, 17, that he was robbed by an Uber driver who was identified on the Uber app as “Alexander.” Mount and a friend told deputies that they were dropped off at a Palm Harbor residence when the driver became agitated claiming that their fare was canceled. The driver claimed they owed him money.
Deputies said Mount and his friend got out of the driver’s 2017 Hyundai Elantra and there was an argument. At some point during the argument, the Uber driver got out of his car and grabbed Mount’s gold necklace, forcefully pulling it necklace off Mount. The Uber driver got back in his car and drove away with the necklace.
Mount told deputies the necklace was valued at several thousand dollars.
Deputies were able to identify Troy as the Uber driver and went to his home in Clearwater. Deputies said they found Troy’s Elantra and saw the necklace in the front seat center console in plain view. Deputies said the damage to the necklace was consistent with Mount’s allegations. Deputies said they also verified that Mount’s Uber fare was paid for.
