Tow Truck Driver Killed in Hillsborough Crash

The driver was standing by the side of the road loading a vehicle when he was hit, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A tow truck driver is dead and the driver of a pickup has been charged with manslaughter after an early morning crash that a portion of  I-75 for hours, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troy Maguire, 48, of Ruskin, died at the scene. Arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage was Gregory Peter Miller, 44, of Lakewood Ranch, troopers said. Miller was not injured.

Troopers had stopped three vehicles found racing this morning on southbound I-75 south of Big Bend Road about 3 a.m. this morning (Oct. 9). Troopers said tow trucks were on-scene loading the vehicles at a bout 4:16 a.m. when a southbound Honda Ridgeline driven by Miller failed to move over for the patrol cars and tow trucks located on the outside shoulder of the roadway.  The Honda pickup left travel lane and collided with Mr. Maguire who standing outside of the third and final vehicle to be loaded, troopers said. The Honda then collided with the Sunpoint Towing tow truck itself.

The crash closed southbound I-75 at Big Bend Road until 9 a.m.
