Temple Terrace Man Charged in Deadly Shooting at Tampa Mosque

He turned himself in Saturday afternoon, Hillsborough deputies said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Temple Terrace man has been arrested and charged with a May shooting at a Tampa mosque that left one man dead, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

MD Rakibul Haque, 40, of Temple Terrace, was charged with one count of Second Degree Felony Murder with a Firearm. Haque turned himself in Saturday (June 29) afternoon.

Haque was charged in connection with the May 20 shooting in the parking lot of the Islamic Society of Tampa Bay Mosque on E Sligh Avenue in Tampa. (Click here for related story.)

Investigators said then that an off-duty Hillsborough deputy had just finished working security detail at the mosque when he heard gun shots coming from the parking lot of the mosque.The deputy found Haque holding a gun and another man who had been shot at least two times.

The deputy was able to detain the suspected shooter until additional deputies arrived. A firearm was found at the scene.

At that time, detectives said they believe the deceased man, whose name has not been released, and Haque knew each other. Both were at the mosque attending prayer services.
