Teens Charged after Pinellas Park SWAT Team Called Out

Crime | Arrest | Public Safety

The two teens are brothers who got into a fight inside their condominium, the Pinellas Park Police Department said.

PINELLAS PARK – Two teens were arrested Wednesday (Feb. 15) after a fight resulted in the SWAT team’s being called to their home, according to the Pinellas Park Police Department.

Khalid S. Johnson, 16, was charged with one count of aggravated assault with a firearm. His younger brother, Eshunn Cummings Jr., 14, was charged with one count of aggravated battery. Both are felony charges, police said.

Officers said police were called to the residence, 5839 62nd Ave. N, No. 121, about 3:30 p.m. for a physical disturbance between two juvenile brothers. Police said they talked with Eshunn and his mother, Saleemah Johnson, who were both found outside the condo.

They told police that Eshunn and his older brother, Khalid, had been involved in physical fight inside the condo. Police said Eshunn told them that he had slashed his brother’s hand with a butcher knife and, in retaliation, Khalid threatened him with a handgun. Saleemah Johnson was not home at the time and arrived just before police.

Officers were told that Khalid had retreated back inside the condo with the firearm and was refusing to come out. A blood trail leading back into the apartment was also found. Officers evacuated nearby condos and tired to contact Khalid. After several attempts to communicate with Khalid with no response from inside the condo, the SWAT team was called out about 5:30 p.m. Officers then closed 62nd Avenue N between 58th and 60th streets.

SWAT officers and negotiators continued to try and make contact and communicate with Khalid. Officers could only hear a TV on inside the condo with no visual confirmation of Khalid’s being inside.

Negotiators were later able to make contact with Khalid both by phone and text message. While trying to confirm Khalid’s whereabouts they were able to locate his mobile phone’s location at Teresa’s Food Mart, 2601 30th Ave. N in St. Petersburg. Pinellas Park police contacted the St. Petersburg Police Department and requested to have officers check the address for Khalid. St. Petersburg police found Khalid and arrested him with no incident.

Pinellas Park police made sure no one was in the condo. They also tried to arrest Eshunn, who, police said, tried to run away but was caught.

Police said they are trying to find the handgun and discover how Khalid got hold of it.
