Teen Accused of Stealing Lunch Money from 10 Year Old

The victim picked the teen out of a photo lineup, the Clearwater Police Department said.

CLEARWATER – Police here have charged a Clearwater High School student in Monday’s (March 6) theft of lunch money from an elementary school student, according to the Clearwater Police Department.

Officers said the 16 year old was arrested Tuesday (March 7) evening while trying to break into a car. The 10 year old was able to positively identify the teen in a photo lineup, officers said. He was charged with robbery by sudden snatching and vehicle burglary.

The original robbery happened just before 8 a.m. Monday at Rainbow Drive and Comet Avenue. Officers said the 10-year-old was counting the money as he walked to school when the teen came up from behind and snatched the money out of his hands.

Four Clearwater police officers showed up Tuesday afternoon at Skycrest Elementary to to meet with the boy. They took along a sandwich and chips and a Clearwater Police Department patch.

“Nobody takes a kid’s lunch money,” Cpl. Chris Ziermann said. “We wanted to make this right.”
