Teen, 14, Charged with Murder After Crash of Stolen Car, St. Pete Police Say

The teen was driving the stolen car. His 15-year-old passenger died of injuries he received in the crash, St. Petersburg police said.

ST. PETERSBURG – A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder in connection with the death of a 15-year-old boy of injuries he received in the crash of a stolen car, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Myles Abbott, 14, was charged with vehicular homicide/third degree murder in the death of Alijah Armstead, 15. The murder charge arose from the fact that Alijah died of injuries received in the commission of car theft, a felony.

The crash happened about 11:23 a.m. Nov. 19 in the 4000 block of 11th Avenue S. Police said Abbott was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro west on 11th Avenue at a high rate of speed. As the Camaro crossed 40th Avenue S, the car struck a dip in the roadway and Abbott lost control of the vehicle. It left the roadway and struck a tree.

Both Abbott and Alijah had to be extricated from the vehicle by St Petersburg Fire Rescue because of the extensive damage to the car. They were both taken to Bayfront Health St Petersburg, Abbott suffered serious injuries; Alijah, life-threatening injuries. Alijah succumbed to his injuries Jan 1.

The car was reported stolen during the investigation into the crash.
