Tampa Police Shoot, Kill Murder Suspect

He fled from police, tried to carjack a vehicle from a bystander, and fired at officers, the Tampa Police Department said.

TAMPA – A man wanted for murder in Georgia is dead after he engaged in a chase and gun battle Sunday (April 1) with officers who were trying to arrest him, according to the Tampa Police Department.

No officers or citizens were injured. Five officers have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure. That includes four officers who fired at the suspect, and one officer who was fired upon by the suspect. They are Sgt. Terrence Covais, who was fired on, and Officers Christopher Cornelius, Nicholas Disparti, Ryan Kuhn, and Nathan Toole.

Timothy O. Wyatt, 41, of Forest Park, GA, died at the scene. He was wanted for a murder and two other non-fatal shootings that happened Sunday morning in South Fulton, GA. At this time it is unclear what connection, if any, the deceased had to the Tampa Bay area.

The pursuit began about 6:12 p.m. after Mr. Wyatt was spotted in a white 2017 Chevrolet Impala near Hillsborough Avenue and N 15th Street. Upon seeing a police car, Mr. Wyatt fled from Tampa officers who were backed up by Florida Highway Patrol troopers. A pursuit was begun near E Hillsborough Avenue and N Nebraska Avenue. Near E Sligh Avenue and Nebraska Mr. Wyatt fired a weapon at a police officer.

TPD ‘s air service responded and began tracking the suspect’s vehicle from the air, at which time the officers on the ground backed off from the pursuit and Mr. Wyatt began driving at a more reasonable speed. His Chevrolet stopped at the intersection of N 15th Street and E 28th Avenue where he got out of the Chevrolet and immediately began firing at officers. Mr. Wyatt then tried to carjack a vehicle belonging to Katrina Majurie, 32, of Tampa. Tampa police returned fire, striking him.

TPD officers and FHP troopers performed CPR on Mr. Wyatt until the arrival of Tampa Fire Rescue. Despite those efforts, he died at the scene. Two handguns were found near hhis body.
