Tampa Police Officer Shoots, Kills Man Wielding Machete

Neither the officer nor the teen who was threatened was injured, the Tampa Police Department said.

TAMPA – A police officer shot and killed a man Saturday (Feb. 10) who was using a machete to threaten a teen, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Sidney T. Richardson IV, 48, of Brandon. died of his wounds. The teen, Jessica Marsh, 17, was not injured. She is Richardson’s cousin.

Police said they received a call about 6:54 p.m. concerning a man threatening a relative with a machete 1800 block of Marvy Avenue. When officers arrived, they discovered Mr. Richardson in a room with Marsh.

The officers said they ordered Mr. Richardson to drop the machete several times. After he refused one of the officers deployed his taser, but he still did not drop the machete.

The officers feared for their safety and for Marsh’s safety. One of the officers opened fire and struck Mr. Richardson.

No officers were injured. They have been placed on paid administrative leave as the case is investigated, as is standard practice.
