Tampa Police Charge One in Fatal Hit and Run

Shawn Erik Lentz | Tampa Police | Arrests

A Tampa motorcycle driver died from injuries he received in the March 5 crash.

TAMPA – A man has been charged in a hit and run crash that killed a motorcyclist, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Shawn Erik Lentz, 36, of Tampa, has been charged with one count each of leaving the scene of an accident with death, and filing a false report of a crime.

Lentz was charged in connection with a March 5 hit and run crash that killed Jose R. Mcella, 29, of Tampa. Police said Mr. Mcella was driving east on Waters Avenue W on his 2007 Suzuki motorcycle when a Chevrolet pickup that was traveling west on Waters turned in front of him. The motorcycle struck the passenger side of the truck. The driver of the truck fled the scene on foot, leaving his truck behind. Mr. Mcella was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Lentz owned the truck, but police said he told them it had been stolen. Officers were able to locate a witness who was able to identify Lentz as the driver who fled after the crash. Lentz was arrested Sunday (April 2) by the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Apprehension Unit.
