TAMPA – A suspect was shot and a police dog burned Thursday (Jan. 12) during a burglary at a Tampa home, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Joey Antonio Kennedy, 40, was taken to a hospital with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries, officers said. A Tampa police dog, Indo, received burns to his head and is being treated by a veterinarian. No other officers were injured.

Tampa police said they received a report of a burglary in progress about 10:53 a.m. at 1022 E 25th Ave. When officers arrived at the house, they saw a side window was broken. Officers said they recognized a car parked outside the house as belonging to a man with an “extensive criminal record and outstanding warrants.” Three officers entered the house where they found Kennedy, who threw a “flaming accelerant” on Indo and Officer Tim Bergman.
