Tampa Man Critically Injures 16-Day-Old Baby, Deputies Say

Aaron James Bordelon | Hillsborough Sheriff | Arrests

Doctors determined the child suffered from skull fractures and severe traumatic brain injury, Hillsborough deputies said.

TAMPA – A Tampa man is accused of physically abusing a 16-day-old child after it woke him up, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Aaron James Bordelon, 29, of Tampa, was charged with one count each of Aggravated Child Abuse (Felony) – Aggravated Battery Great Bodily Harm and Child Neglect (Felony) with Great Bodily Harm. Deputies said Bordelon was arrested Monday (Feb. 18) after he admitted to harming the baby, who was under his care and supervision at the time.

Bordelon became agitated when the child woke him up so soon after a recent feeding. Deputies said he described forcefully picking up the child and admitted “this is my fault.”

Bordelon noted that, after the interaction, the child’s physical condition deteriorated, breathing slowed and bruising under the eyes and on the eyelids was already visible. He did not call for immediate medical attention at that time.

Once the victim’s mother arrived at their location, Bordelon took the baby to Brandon Regional Hospital using the Lyft ride share service. He tried to conceal the bruising with makeup but the mother tried to remove
it before arriving in the emergency room.

Doctors determined the child suffered from skull fractures and severe traumatic brain injury and is in critical condition.

“Abuse in any form is unacceptable and this case is especially tragic and emotionally difficult for our detectives as it involves an innocent and defenseless child,” Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “There is help available for parents who may feel overwhelmed, by calling 211 for the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay.”
