Jose J. Vasquez Jr | Hillsborough Sheriff | Arrests

He had already been arrested and charged in connection with the fight. The charges were upgraded Monday, according to Hillsborough deputies.

TAMPA – A Tampa man has been charged in connection with the death of another man of injuries he suffered in a fight between the two at a bowling alley, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Jose J. Vasquez Jr., 22, of Tampa, was arrested Nov. 13 and charged with one count each of felony Battery, Providing a False Name to Law Enforcement and arrest on a felony warrant (Felon in Possession of a Firearm). On Monday (Nov. 18), Vasquez’s charges were upgraded to felony Manslaughter.

Deputies said that, about 1 a.m. Nov. 10, Vasquez became involved in a fight with another man in the parking lot of Brandon Crossroads Bowl, 609 Crater Lane, Tampa.

During the course of the fight, the victim hit his head on the pavement at least twice, according to witnesses. When onlookers tried to step in and pick up the victim, describing him as being “out of it,” they told deputies that Vasquez again intentionally struck the victim in the face with his fist, causing the victim to fall to the pavement and strike his head again.

When Hillsborough deputies arrived, Vasquez provided them with a false name and fled the scene. The victim was taken to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. On Saturday (Nov. 16), the victim died at Tampa General from his injuries.

Deputies said an autopsy completed by the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday (Nov. 18), determined the manner of death to be homicide caused by blunt impact to the head.
