TAMPA – Police have arrested a Tampa man and charged him with leaving the scene after he hit a bicyclist early Saturday (March 12) morning.

Joseph Anthony Ragsdale, 56, was arrested late Saturday and charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury, Tampa police said.

Police said the victim, a 22-year-old man, was riding his bicycle on 50th Street N near 30th Avenue E about 3:30 a.m. Saturday (March 12) when he was hit by a small pickup, which did not stop. The bicyclist was taken to a local hospital where he was being treated for life-threatening injuries. The identity of the cyclist was being withheld pending notification of relatives.

A witness described the driver and the vehicle that hit the cyclist. Later Saturday, police said, they received a call from a citizen at Florida and Osborne requesting to meet with officers regarding a suspect in the hit and run. When they arrived, officers said they contacted Ragsdale and found a small pickup matching the description provided by a witness to the crash. It had heavy damage to the roof and windshield.

Police said Ragsdale refused to speak without his attorney present. Officers arrested him and took him to the Orient Road Jail.
