Both he and a driver not involved in the race were injured, Tampa police said. A second driver who was racing fled the scene.

TAMPA – A Tampa man is facing a charge of street racing after a crash Wednesday (June 6) that severely injured him and another driver, the Tampa Police Department said.

Michael Heiman, 23, of Tampa, was charged with racing on public streets, driving on a suspended license, aggravated careless driving, as well as multiple civil citations. He and Shawntae C Allen of Tampa, who was not involved in the street race, were taken to Florida Hospital with severe but not life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened about 10:51 a.m. in the 11300 block of N Florida Avenue.

Witnesses told police they saw a blue 2012 Dodge Challenger, driven by Heiman, street racing southbound on N Florida with a white Dodge Challenger driven by an unknown driver. Both vehicles were exceeding the posted speed limit.

Witnesses said they saw Heiman rapidly switch from the inside to the outside lane to avoid stopped traffic. Heiman did not see stopped traffic in the outside lane and over-corrected his Challenger, police said. This action caused his vehicle to spin out of control and into northbound Florida Avenue traffic. Heiman’s Dodge hit the 2005 Buick that Allen was driving.

Witnesses were able to get a possible tag of the second vehicle involved in the street racing. Detectives said they are following up on that aspect of the investigation.
