HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa man has been accused of trying to kidnap a 16-year-old girl after she got off a school bus, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Juan Pablo Bonilla, 51, of Tampa, was charged with one count of attempted kidnapping.

The incident happened about 4 p.m. Aug, 10. The 16-year-old girl was walking southbound on Himes Avenue after getting off the school bus at Himes and Flora Street. The girl noticed she was being followed by a faded red SUV that had all four windows rolled down. The man inside asked her, in broken English, if she wanted a ride. Deputies said she did not answer him.

The man continued to turn down side streets and eventually parked at the intersection of Himes and Minnehaha Street, where, deputies said, he got out of the SUV and approached her from behind and, while laughing, tried to grab her.

The girl ran until she reached the Bank of America at Himes and Hillsborough avenues where she asked a security guard for help.
