Tampa Man Accused in Carrollwood Attempted Home Invasions

Derrick Lamont Walker | Hillsborough Sheriff | Arrests

Hillsborough deputies caught him after a foot chase.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa man, who was captured after a foot chase, has been charged in attempted home invasions in a Carrollwood neighborhood, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Derrick Lamont Walker, 22, of Tampa, was charged with three counts each of Attempted Robbery Home Invasion and Shooting at, within, or into a Building; two counts of Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony; and one count each of Aggravated Assault with Intent to Commit a Felony; Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon; Resisting an Officer without Violence; and Open Carrying of a Weapon. He is being held at the Orient Road Jail without bond.

Deputies said that, about 3:30 p.m. Saturday (March 23), Walker was walking southbound on Rosemount Drive as a resident in the 10400 block was parking his car in his driveway. Walker tried to talk to the man as he was getting his mail. The man continued walking to his front door when he heard someone running at him from behind. The man quickly entered his home and realized it was Walker as he turned around to lock the door.

Shortly after, Walker began banging on the front door and turning the door knob while trying to get into the home. Deputies said Walker pulled a 9 MM Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun and fired one shot through the mostly glass front door of the home. The round penetrated the glass, narrowly missing the man inside. Neither he nor his two family members inside the home were injured.

Walker then went to a home a few doors down Rosemount, where he knocked on the front door of another home. A man answered the front door, at which time, Walker pointed a handgun at him. The man immediately closed and locked his front door.

Walker saw sheriff’s deputies arriving and began running away. Walker was found with the 9 MM handgun still in his hand.

Deputies said the 9 MM Smith & Wesson was stolen out of Pasco County.

Deputies said they are working to determine if Walker is the same suspect who robbed and shot a woman about a mile away in the same neighborhood around 6 a.m. Saturday as she was feeding neighborhood cats in front of her home on the 4800 block of Grove Point Drive.
