Teens had been playing with the cable, St. Petersburg police said.

ST. PETERSBURG – Members of the Tampa bomb squad say that three “suspicicous devices” found at Tyrone Mall on Friday (Feb. 10) were not harmful, but were sections of underground power cable.

St. Petersburg police said they were called to the mall, 6901 22nd Ave. N, about 6:31 p.m. after mall security reported finding “suspicious devices” by the exterior door to Victoria’s Secret. Police said that, in an abundance of caution, they roped off the area and called the bomb squad. They also closed Victoria’s Secret but allowed the remainder of the mall to stay open.

When bomb squad members arrived, police said, they determined that the items were three sections of underground power cable. The sections of cable were approximately 12 inches long and about 2 inches in diameter. The cables had end caps that were taped onto their ends making them somewhat resemble pipe bombs.

Three teens had found the items somewhere nearby and were playing with them, officers said. When approached by mall security, they placed them on the ground. There was no criminal intent or wrongdoing on the part of the teens.
