A deputy who was a passenger in the sheriff’s office car suffered minor injuries, Pinellas deputies say.

LEALMAN – A St. Petersburg woman was arrested after a crash this morning (Nov. 17) this morning with a sheriff’s car, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputy Nazir Amin, 33, who was a passenger in the sheriff’s car, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. He has since been released from the hospital. No one else was injured in the crash.

Leilani Christine Smith, 32, of St. Petersburg, was charged with one count each of Driving Under the Influence and Refusal to Submit to Testing.

The crash happened about 1:08 a.m. at the intersection of 49th Street N and 38th Avenue in the unincorporated Lealman area.

Sheriff’s investigators said Deputy Denise Duran, 45, was on-duty and driving her fully marked 2010 Ford Crown Victoria east on 38th Avenue N. She was trying to make a north (left) turn onto 49th Street.

Smith was driving west on 38th Avenue N in her 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis approaching the intersection for 49th Street.

Deputies said the traffic light for both westbound and eastbound traffic on 38th Avenue was yellow as Duran made a north turn onto 49th Street, and into the path of Smith, who hit the passenger side of the sheriff’s department car.
