The man intentionally hit the officer with his car, then fled. The officer fired four shots at him, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

INDIAN SHORES – An Indian Shores police officer suffered minor injuries when a suspect tried to run him over early this morning (May 1), according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Officer Matthew Holm, 32, was taken to the Largo Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Holm managed to fire four times at the suspect as he fled the scene.

Stephan J. Weekley, 42, of St. Petersburg, was charged with one count of attempted murder on law enforcement officer.

Sheriff’s detectives said that, about 3:15 a.m. Holm saw a 2017 Nissan Altima and a 2012 Mazda3 driving at a high rate of speed northbound on Gulf Boulevard in Indian Shores. Holm turned on his emergency lights and siren and made a traffic stop near 19540 Gulf Blvd. in Indian Shores.

The driver and only occupant of the Nissan, Brittney Mikus, 28, of Cheswick, PA, stopped her car on the east side of Gulf Boulevard. Holm pulled up behind Mikus and got out of his patrol vehicle.

Holm motioned for Weekley, who was driving the Mazda, to pull over beside the Nissan Altima on the east side of the roadway.

Weekley slowed down briefly, then accelerated directly towards Holm, intentionally hitting him and knocking him down. Deputies said Holm pulled his agency firearm and fired four rounds at the Mazda, which fled north on Gulf Boulevard.

Holm radioed for help and provided a vehicle description to responding law enforcement officers.

Detectives say deputies spotted the Mazda traveling northbound on Gulf Boulevard. Deputies successfully deployed a tire deflation device near Fifth Avenue; however, the damaged Mazda continued to flee and deputies lost sight of it.

Deputies said they found the Mazda3 abandoned near 1115 Hidden Harbor Drive in Indian Rocks Beach.

K-9 deputies responded and followed Weekley to the area of the Indian Rocks Nature Preserve, located at 901 Gulf Blvd. With the help of the Flight Unit, deputies found Weekley hiding in the mangroves near the preserve.

Weekley was taken into custody without incident. Detectivessaid they confirmed there were no other occupants in Weekley’s vehicle.

Detectives interviewed Mikus and she was released.
