St. Pete Police Shoot, Kill Carjacking Suspect

St Pete Police Shooting

He fired at and struck a police cruiser, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

ST. PETERSBURG – A man suspected of carjacking died this morning (Oct. 25) of wounds he received when two police officers shot him after he had fired at them, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Timothy Earl Jackson, 33, died at a hospital where he was taken after the shooting. He had been released in August after serving nine months for robbery.

The incident that ended in Mr. Jackson’s death began about 8:45 p.m. Monday (Oct. 23) when a man reported a carjacking. He told officers that two men blocked his pickup truck as he was driving in the 4800 block of 20th Avenue S. One pointed a black semi-automatic gun at him and stole his white Toyota pick-up truck.

About 12:50 this morning, an officer spotted the stolen pick-up truck at the Choice Food Store at 5th Avenue S and 34th Street. Police said the officer kept the truck under surveillance. The truck appeared to have a flat front tire and was driving very slowly, eventually turning east into the alley behind 2940 Freemont Terrace S.

Two patrol cruisers turned in behind him. Mr. Jackson got out of the truck and fired at the patrol cruiser, police said. Two officers – 10-year veteran Matthew Laliberte and 3-year veteran Andre Sousa – fired back.

Laliberte and Sousa are on administrative duty while St. Petersburg police detectives, the Office of Professional Standards and the State Attorneys Office investigate.
