ST. PETERSBURG – Two people have been accused of following seniors home home from stores in order to steal their purses as they unloaded their shopping bags, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Raven Mitchell, 21, of Clearwater, was charged with one count each of burglary to an occupied conveyance, burglary to an unoccupied conveyance, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Shagontha Legrand, 31, of St. Petersburg, was charged with one count each of burglary to an occupied conveyance, burglary to an occupied conveyance, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and dealing in stolen property.

Police said that, on Sunday (April 8), they followed a 95-year-old woman as she drove home from the grocery store, and stole her purse from her car after she parked in front of her home. The woman was still in the car, but was not injured.

Legrand and Mitchell are connected with a similar case involved a 90-year-old woman, police said. On Tuesday (April 10), police said, the two searched the woman’s car and trunk after she returned from the grocery store. They didn’t find anything to steal, but a witness provided police with the getaway car’s tag number, enabling detectives to identify Legrand and Mitchell.

On Thursday (April 12) Last night, detectives saw them in a Walgreen’s parking lot, 900 49th St. N, entering an unlocked SUV and stealing a purse. They were arrested shortly afterwards,and the property was returned to the owner.

Police said the two also have charges connected to cases in Pinellas Park.
