He is charged with crimes in St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg police said similar crimes took place in Largo, elsewhere in Pinellas and in Hillsborough County.

ST. PETERSBURG – A Missouri man has been accused of thefts at three gyms, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Cody James Heilig, 28, of St. Louis, MO, is facing 11 felony charges in connection with thefts at You Fit Gym, Amped Gym and Suncoast Gym. Those charges include two counts of auto burglary, three counts of fraudulent use of a credit card, three counts of possession of a stolen credit card, one count of armed auto burglary, one count of felon in possession of a firearm, and one count of grand theft.

Police said they are investigating whether Heilig is connected to more St. Petersburg cases. They said he might face additional charges from neighboring agencies.

Over the last couple of weeks, police said they had several cases involving a man’s entering local gyms and stealing car keys from the locker room. He would use the keys to enter the victim’s car and steal credit cards. The suspect then used the stolen credit cards to buy gift cards and clothes.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Largo Police Department and Hillsborough Sheriff’s Office had similar crimes reported in their jurisdictions. During the course of the investigation, with the assistance of Hillsborough Sheriff’s investigators, a suspect was identified.

On Wednesday (May 16), police said they found Heilig’s vehicle in the parking lot of a local hotel and arrested him.
