ST. PETERSBURG – A man was arrested Thursday (Jan. 10) after he tried to drown and hit and kicked a cat, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Scott Rush, 48, of St. Petersburg, was charged with one count of cruelty to animals, a felony.

Police said the abuse was reported Wednesday (Jan. 9) when a caller reported seeing Rush throw a cat that was inside a carrier, into a ditch filled with water.

When he saw he was being watched, Rush grabbed the carrier and went to a nearby dumpster behind a business at 4444 4th St. N. Police said he took the cat from the carrier and began kicking and hitting the animal.

The cat was checked out a veterinarian’s office, then taken to Pinellas Animal Services.
