ST. PETERSBURG – A man who was upset with his ex-girlfriend was taken into custody Friday (Jan. 10) after he vandalized a St. Petersburg apartment complex and prompted a lockdown at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Joseph Michael Ruberto, 54, was arrested in Hernando County. He was charged with one count each of Armed Burglary, Intimidation, Criminal Mischief, and Firing a Weapon in Public or on Residential Property, according to Hernando County Jail records.

St. Petersburg police said that, about 2 a.m. Friday, the department received a call about a 54- year-old man with a gun who vandalized a vehicle at an apartment complex at 10601 Gandy Blvd N. The suspect also damaged the door of the apartment of his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend.

When officers arrived, the suspect – identified as Ruberto – had already left the area.

Later in the morning, police received a tip that Ruberto might be in the area around MacDill and alerted the base as a precaution. MacDill temporarily locked down the base.

Later in the day, police were told that Ruberto was in the custody of Hernando sheriff’s deputies.
