ST. PETERSBURG – A St. Petersburg police officer has been accused of picking up a prostitute while on his day off.

Reginald Mitchell, 46, is facing a misdemeanor charge of soliciting a prostitute. He was given a citation to appear. He has worked for the St. Petersburg Police Department since Sept. 11, 1995. He was working as a recruiter.

Mitchell is also the subject of an internal affairs investigation. He was placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

Amanda McLaughlin, 32, his co-defendant, is facing a felony prostitution charge. McLaughlin is facing a more serious charge than Mitchell, police said, because she has previous convictions for prostitution. Her case is being referred to the State Attorney’s Office.

Police said an undercover officer conducting a prostitution operation arrested Mitchell about 8 a.m. today (June 30) after he was seen picking up a known prostitute in his personal vehicle on his day off.
