Robber Climbed Through Driver’s Window, Hillsborough Deputies Say
The driver suffered cuts to her hand after struggling with the suspect, deputies said.
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A driver fought off a man who climbed through her car window at an ATM and tried to take her car, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
The woman driver, whose name was not available, suffered a cut to her right hand and fingers.
Jerome Stephen Marciniak, 59, of Tampa, was charged with Armed Burglary with a Deadly Weapon, Armed Burglary of a Conveyance with Battery, and Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon.
Deputies said the incident happened about 8 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 23) at the Regions Bank, 10109 Hillsborough W.
Marciniak approached the woman while she was sitting in the driver’s seat of her 2010 Honda Insight, at the drive-through ATM machine. Marciniak brandished a 4-inch blade pocket knife and demanded the woman’s money.
After the woman refused to give him any money, Marciniak leaned into the open driver’s side window and demanded the woman give him the car. After the woman refused to give him the car, deputies said, Marciniak crawled through the open driver’s side window, crawled over the woman, and maneuvered himself onto the passenger seat.
Marciniak removed the keys from the ignition while waiving the knife at the woman. Deputies said the woman regained control of the car keys and began struggling with Marciniak over the knife. After several minutes’ struggling over the knife, Marciniak grabbed a $1 bill off the passenger floorboard and fled out the passenger side door.
Deputies said they found Marciniak in the area of Osbourne Avenue/17th Street where he was arrested without incident.
