Eastbound traffic on the Courtney Campbell Causeway was temporarily disrupted.

TAMPA – A bicyclist died early this morning (July 13) after he came into a live electrical wire while riding on the bike path at the Courtney Campbell Causeway, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Police say their information is tentative because the situation is still unfolding. More information will be available later. But it appears, officers said, that the bicyclist was riding on the bike path near Whiskey Joe’s, 7720 W Courtney Campbell Causeway, about 6:40 a.m. when he came into contact with a live electrical wire. Tampa police, Tampa Fire Rescue, and TECO were called to the scene.

Officials could not approach the bicyclist until the power was turned off. When they were able to approach the cyclist, they confirmed that he was dead. He has not yet been positively identified. His identity will be released after next of kin has been notified.

Eastbound traffic on the Courtney Campbell Causeway was temporarily affected; in the interest of safety, three lanes were narrowed to one lane for a short distance, then back to three lanes.
