PINELLAS COUNTY – The members of the Pinellas Police Standards Council have voted to oppose two legislative bills that would allow for the open carrying of firearms.

The council voted Wednesday (Dec. 9) to urge the Florida Legislature to defeat House Bill 163 and Senate Bill 300, both of which would allow concealed weapon permit holders to carry firearms openly and in an insecure manner. Council members cited the fact there are nearly 56,000 concealed carry permit holders in Pinellas County who would be able to openly carry firearms. Combined with the fact there are nearly a million residents of Pinellas County and nearly six million tourists who visit annually, they cited the potential infringement on the public safety of residents and visitors.

The council is made up of representatives of the 13 different law enforcement agencies in Pinellas County, the Pasco-Pinellas State Attorney’s Office and the Center for Public Innovation.
