Police: Clearwater Woman Left Scene After Hitting Motorcyclist
She hit the motorcyclist after he was thrown from his bike, Pinellas Park police said.
PINELLAS PARK – A Clearwater woman has been accused of leaving the scene after she hit a downed motorcyclist, the Pinellas Park Police Department said.
Sierra Jean Ethridge, 26, was charged with one count of Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death.
Ethridge was arrested in connection with the Sunday (May 12) crash on U.S. 19 N that killed Christopher Mathew Babcock, 22, of Clearwater. Mr. Babcock was riding his 2006 Kawasaki at a high rate of speed when he lost control and was thrown off the bike. He was then hit by an unsuspecting driver. At the time, police said all involved in the crash were cooperating with officers. (Click here for related story.)
But Monday (May 13), police said they received information of a third vehicle involved in the fatal crash. hrough follow-up investigation, the suspect vehicle was identified and located by investigators, matching evidence found at the crash site.
Further investigation revealed that Ethridge was the driver who hit Mr. Babcock after he was thrown from his motorcycle. Police said Ethridge left the scene without stopping to render aid to Babcock. At no point did Ethridge notify a law enforcement agency of her involvement in the crash.
