Police Charge Driver with Fleeing Scene After Hitting Clearwater Crossing Guard

The driver was pinned in by other motorists a few blocks away, Clearwater police say.

CLEARWATER – A Clearwater man was arrested Wednesday (Jan. 8) after he fled the scene when he hit a crossing guard near a middle school, the Clearwater Police Department said.

The crossing guard, , Ernest Comeau, 78, was admitted to Morton Plant Hospital. His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening. He has been a crossing guard for three years.

Gregory Robert Olson, 68, of Clearwater, was charged with one count each of Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Injury, Driver with a License Suspended or Revoked (First Offense), and Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device.

The crash happened about 4:28 p.m. afternoon at S Belcher Road and Catalina Drive just south of Oak Grove Middle School in Clearwater.

Comeau was helping pupils cross Catalina Drive when he was hit by a Honda that then hit a Ford. The Honda left the scene but was pinned in by other motorists at Belcher and Nursery roads, police said.
