Plant City Officer Shoots Man Who Tried to Flee

The man fired a gun at an officer and later pointed a gun at him, Plant City police said.

PLANT CITY – A police officer shot a man Friday (Jan. 20) who fired at and pointed a gun at the officer, according to the Plant City Police Department.

The man was taken to Lakeland Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. No officers were injured. No identifying information about the man or the officer was available.

Police said they answered a call about 9:35 p.m. concerning a “large and hostile group of subjects” at the McDonald’s restaurant, 2001 James L. Redman Parkway.

When the officer arrived, a man fired at least one round from a firearm in the officer’s direction. Police said the man then fled the scene in a white, four-door sedan. The officer chased the suspect along Alexander Street to the intersection of Reynolds Street where the fleeing man tried to turn east. Officers said he was unable to make the turn and traveled into a business plaza before crashing the car into a dental office.

After colliding into the building, officers said, the man tried to run away. They said he pointed a gun at the officer who had chased him and the officer shot and hit him.He was taken into custody and transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Per standard Plant City Police Department protocol, the officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of several simultaneous investigations by the Plant City Police Department, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office.
