Pinellas Sheriff Warns about Phone Scam

The scammer says he’s a Pinellas sheriff’s captain. He’s not, the sheriff says.

PINELLAS COUNTY – Deputies here are warning people to be on alert to a recent phone scam.

The suspect is calling Pinellas residents posing as Sheriff’s Capt. Mark Dunnagan. The suspect calls victims and tells them he is a captain with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and they have failed to appear in court. The suspect says if the victims don’t pay a fine, he will send a deputy to their home to arrest them. The suspect making the phone calls is a male and the calls have all come from a telephone number with a 727 area code.

Residents need to know that the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office will never call people to request money over the telephone. Deputies advise residents not to give personal information or account information over the phone unless you are the one doing the calling.
