A Pinellas Park man has been accused of a road rage incident that resulted in a crash that critically injured a driver not involved in the road rage incident.

PINELLAS PARK – A Pinellas Park man was arrested Friday (June 2) night and charged with causing a crash that critically injured another driver during a road rage incident, police said.

Anthony Powell, 30, of Pinellas Park, was charged with one count of reckless driving causing serious bodily injury to another, a felony. Timothy Ilyes, 52, of Tampa, the injured driver in the May 26 crash, was taken to a hospital with life threatening injuries. Ilyes remains in critical condition.

The crash happened about 4:30 p.m. in the 10000 block of northbound 49th Street N in the area of the U.S. 19 overpass. Pinellas Park police said Powell was engaged in a road rage incident with another unknown vehicle. They said that, during the course of the road rage incident, Powell drove in a dangerous and reckless manner for a period of time that spanned at least 15 blocks.

Police said they determined that Powell would purposely speed up to intentionally cut off the other unknown vehicle and then perform a “brake check” maneuver, which consisted of slamming on the brake pedal in front of the other unknown vehicle. While doing this, Powell lost control of his 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, left the roadway and hit the 2000 Nissan Xtera that Ilyes was driving. Ilyes was not involved in the road rage incident.
