Pinellas Park Police Make Arrest in Hit and Run of Bicyclist
He turned himself in, the Pinellas Park Police Department said.
PINELLAS PARK – A Land O’ Lakes man has been accused of leaving the scene of a traffic crash that injured a bicyclist, the Pinellas Park Police Department said.
Kenneth James Robert Stivers, 31, of Land O’ Lakes, was charged with one count of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in injury. Stivers surrendered himself to officers at the Pinellas Park department on Monday (July 9). Stivers was accompanied by his attorney and did not provide any statements to officers.
The charge arises from a June 29 traffic crash that injured bicyclist Duncan Craver, 20, of St. Petersburg.
The crash happened about 8 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 19 N and 70th Avenue. Police said Craver was crossing U.S. 19 from east to west on his bicycle against the traffic control device. He successfully crossed the northbound lanes of U.S. 19 and stopped on the median between the north- and southbound lanes.
As Craver stood in the middle median between the north- and southbound lanes, police said he was hit by a gold colored Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was traveling south on U.S. 19.
Witnesses to the crash told officers that, as the pickup truck was traveling south in the median lane through the intersection, it drifted out of the lane for unknown reasons and struck Craver. The truck briefly jumped up on to the median before regaining control and continuing south on U.S. 19 away from the scene.
