LARGO – A Pinellas Park man has admitted stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the company that employed him, the Largo Police Department said.

Christopher McGowan, 51, of Pinellas Park, was charged with grand theft. The overall loss to the employer is estimated to be between $800,000 and $1 million.

Police said McGowan began working for Business Card Express as comptroller in 2002. He stole about $800,000 between November 2010 and October 2017 by various means that included opening an American Express card account in the business name then using it for personal expenses. The bill was then paid using monies from the company’s business account.

McGowan is also accused of changing the payroll deductions on his paycheck, resulting in a loss of about $4,400 to Business Card Express, officers said.

Police said they are investigating the possibility that McGowan stole an additional $200,000 from the company between 2007 and 2010 but they’re still waiting to get the records.

McGowan confessed to the theft, police said.
