Pinellas Detention Deputy Accused of DUI

PINELLAS COUNTY – A Pinellas County detention deputy has lost her job after being accused of driving under the influence this morning (Feb. 20), according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Jo Anna M. Barker, 35, a corrections corporal with the Sheriff’s Office, was charged with one count of DUI. Barker was fired after the arrest in accordance with department policy. Barker had worked with the department since Oct. 17, 2011.

Deputies were conducting traffic enforcement on Gulf Boulevard in North Redington Beach about 1:45 a.m when they saw a 2013 white Chevrolet sport utility vehicle traveling northbound at a high rate of speed. Deputies said they stopped the SUV at Coral Avenue and Gulf Boulevard for traveling 67 miles per hour in a 35 mph speed zone. The driver, Barker, identified herself as an off-duty Sheriff’s Office detention corporal. Deputies said that Barker showed signs of impairment and a breath sample indicated she had a blood alcohol content of 0.217/0.214. In Florida, someone is considered legally drunk with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or above.
