The deputy was helping another detention deputy when he was hurt, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

PINELLAS COUNTY – A detention deputy was seriously injured in a struggle with an inmate at the Pinellas County Jail, the sheriff’s office said.

Cpl. David Wall, 60, was taken to a hospital Wednesday (Feb. 22) with what were originally thought to be non-life threatening injuries. However, his condition worsened Friday (Feb. 24) while he was in the hospital. Wall required three surgeries for a broken rib and a punctured spleen. He is currently in stable condition. Wall has worked for the sheriff’s office since Nov. 3, 2003.

The other deputy, Corey Bailey, 49, was not injured. He has worked for the sheriff’s office since Jan. 30, 2006.

The inmate, Roy Collin, was charged with with one count of battery on a law enforcement officer and one count of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. Collin, 68, was in jail after being arrested and charged Jan. 20 with one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer.

The struggle began about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday when Wall and Bailey entered inmate Roy Collin’s single cell housing unit to conduct a routine search of the inmate’s cell. Upon entry, deputies said Collin struck Deputy Bailey in the upper chest. Wall went to help Bailey and tried restraining Collin. During the struggle with Collin, deputies said, Wall fell, hittig the left side of his body on the toilet inside the cell.
